Sample Rules

Have I have used these rules in my house for a 17 year-old that severely lacked in the areas responsibility and discipline as well as having no concept of money.

Every child and situation is different.

Rules should be posted somewhere that is easily accessible, but can not readily be seen by others that may come visit the house. For example, these were posted in her bathroom.

House Rules

If you at any point have a question about why I have decided on a particular rule – or even all of them, I really do have a reason for each and will be happy to explain them to you. Each has a purpose.

Job:

  • Once you move in, you have two weeks to find a job working three nights a week (Monday – Friday) UNLESS you join an extracurricular activity.
  • The extracurricular activity/activities MUST occupy the ENTIRE school year. If that means joining one or more clubs/groups, then that’s what that means. I have to approve the extracurricular activity as a qualifying activity.
  • You are not allowed to quit until AT LEAST six months has passed, and a good trial period has been put forth.
  • Either way, job or extracurricular activity, you are still completely responsible for your daily chores.
  • If the job is selected as the choice, one half of your paycheck will be given to me as rent.

House hold:

  • If you see the dog food bowl empty, fill it.
  • If you see the water bowls empty, fill them.
  • No cussing.
  • Bedtime is 10pm on School nights, 11pm on weekends.
  • No phone calls after 9pm or while doing homework.
  • Homework will be started no later than 8pm every night.
  • No one is allowed in the house when I’m not home. Not boys. Not girls. This is not a trust thing with you. This is the fact that I don’t know how the animals would react and we could all end up in jail.
  • No spending the night in or out, no dates, Monday – Thursday.
  • I will NOT buy your personal items (such as hair supplies, make-up, maxi-pads, money to go out with friends, etc.) You will NOT use mine.
  • You are under no circumstances allowed in my bedroom when I am not home.
  • You are not to injure any of the animals at anytime.
  • If you leave the house, you are REQUIRED to write on the white board exactly where you are. You MUST be back in the house no later than 7pm.
  • If you leave the house when I am not home, you will lock the top lock of the front door.
  • Under no circumstances are to you use my computers. They are setup a specific way and are very fragile and easily breakable.
  • Manners are REQUIRED for ANY adult. Adult is defined in this situation as any person that is above the age of 21 or looks like they could be. This includes teachers. Manners are defined as saying “Thank you,” “Please,” “Yes, Sir,” “No ma’am,” “Excuse me,” “I’m sorry,” etc.
  • You will put things back or in their correct place after you are done with them. Examples include, but are not limited to, towels after a shower, paper towels, remote controls, etc.
  • You will ASK before “borrowing” anything that is not clearly yours.

School/Homework:

  • No less than a grade of C on homework, and no lower than B on your report card.

  • Teachers deserve the UTMOST respect at all times - whether you like what theyhave to say or not.

  • Every time you forget a book or needed materials required to do homework or study, you will be docked $1. Come Progress Reports or if notified by your teacher you have not done or completed a homework assignment, you will be docked $5 for EACH missed homework assignment.

Consequence Examples:

  1. Breakage of ANY of the above rules are subject to a mark on the chore board, a decrease in your allowance, and/or being grounded.

  2. Bring home a test grade that is less than a C, homework will be done at 8pm every night at the kitchen table for one hour or more until progress reports or report card is in hand. Allowance cut in half until next progress report or report card.

  3. If the overall grade in a class is below a B on report card or progress report, the above applies. Allowance will be suspended until next progress report or report card.

  4. If the chores are not done correctly, or not done at all, they will be redone, and marked on the board, causing monthly allowance to decrease. If a chore is not done at all, you will be grounded. If the chore chart is not filled out correctly, it will be assumed that the chore was not completed.

  5. If you talk back to a teacher, get kicked out of your extracurricular activity, get fired from your job, get into a fight at school, your life will become extremely unpleasant. Don’t test me on this. Just as a beginning…
    • You will be brought back to school and will publicly apologize to the teacher, as well as volunteer to help the teacher out for one week after school.
    • Get kicked out of an activity, get fired: same as above, as well as required to try to rejoin/get rehired. If you are not permitted to rejoin or get rehired, you have one week to find a new one – or I will find one for you. I promise you won’t like it.
    • If you get in a fight, you WILL go to jail. I will have you arrested for assault and you will be tried as an adult.

If at any point your allowance falls below zero due to lack of following above rules and expectations, the balance will be forwarded. Meaning, if for the month of September you are at zero, the month of October’s allowance will be reduced for each fault.

Allowance:

  • Allowance will be paid the 27th of every month.
  • Allowance is $40 a month.
  • If the chore chart indicates NO faults (including chores, manners, grades, controlling temper, etc.), the allowance for that month will be $50.
  • Your allowance will be used for your own personal desires. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Personal hygiene items (maxi-pads, tampons, hair supplies, make-up, etc.)
    • 1/2 of school events such as field trips.
    • Any money needed to go out with friends.
    • Money to purchase gifts for others (Christmas, birthdays for your friends and family)
    • Saving for a car
