Tips on Creating House Rules

  1. An established schedule for meals, getting up, and bed times.
  2. Manners that are to used with family and non-family members.
  3. Meaningful chores for each member of the family.
  4. Acceptable ways to show anger
  5. Agreed-upon consequences for those who fail to do their part.
  6. Times set aside when each child can receive individual attention from each parent.
  7. Acceptable behavior for everyone when visitors come
  8. Acceptable and not acceptable behavior with other members of the family – siblings and parents
  9. Methods for children to use when unhappy about parental decisions.
  10. Ways of earning extra spending money; allowances
  11. Understanding of mealtime rules.
  12. Acceptable behavior when out in public.

Many families believe that they already know what they want and think about each of the above topics, but often they are not talked about or made clear from the beginning. Then parents become angry when children don’t follow the rules. Talk about or posting the rules helps!
