Criteria to Become Foster or Adoptive Parent(s)

Parents who want to adopt need to consider what it might mean to adopt a child into their family and how this will affect their lives, as well as the life of the child. They must be ready to give a child or children opportunities to develop at their own rate to their fullest abilities - physically, academically, socially, and emotionally - with realistic expectations. Adoptive parents need to be willing to share their home and accept as a full member of the family a child who needs a loving home.

Simple Breakdown:

    • Couples must have been married for at least one year before becoming licensed.

In North Carolina, a single person or married couple over 21 years old can adopt. Although State guidelines say foster parents should be under the age of 65, this requirement may be waived for applicants in good health. You can rent an apartment or own your own home, work outside your home or be a stay-at-home parent. You can be a parent already or have no children at home. Adoptive parents come from all walks of life, with a wide range of life styles, philosophies, and jobs. Families must also be financially stable, have adequate sleeping space for a child (at least 40 square feet of bedroom space) and have a telephone. References and criminal background checks are obtained on all applicants.
