There are SEVERAL books out there that hit on the topic very well.

- Adopting the Older Child
by Claudia Jewett (May 1979)
This book can be called Fostering the Older Child, as well. It offers SEVERAL examples of different type of families receiving different types of children. It brings to light many different situations that many arise with your new child, and proposes ways to handle them. It also hits on the very sensitive area of discipline. I HIGHLY recommend this book to ANY prospective foster or adoptive parents.
- Helping Children Cope with Separation and Loss, Revised Edition
by Claudia Jewett Jarratt (March 1994)
This book is for children of foster care, adoption, divorce, death and more. A necessary addition to your foster/adoption collection.
- Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew
by Sherrie Eldridge (October 12, 1999)
Although I have not personally read this, several now grown adopted children have HIGHLY recommended this book to every one with adopted children.
- The Primal Wound: Understanding the Adopted Child
by Nancy Verrier (April 1, 1993)
A good book to read - as long as it is not your first book on the topic. If is your first book on the topic, you may shy away from the whole idea. Kinda negative. DEFINITELY worth reading if you have a few other books already under your belt. Gives you a different and perhaps realistic view on things and situations.
- Adopting the Hurt Child: Hope for Families With Special-Needs Kids : A Guide for Parents and Professionals
by Gregory C. Keck, Regina M. Kupecky (May 1, 1998)
This book is a must read for anyone involved in a difficult relationship due to childhood issues or anyone thinking about adopting a child. This definitely helps you to think long and hard about your possible parenting capabilities with a child with Special Needs. I definitely related to the Dreams and Realities Chapter, which has caused me to really evaluate what I am hoping to accomplish in my life with this adoption. This is just simply an honest, informative book helping to educate people before taking such a major step in life. Also, this book provides possible answers to the difficult situations we may face in the future.
